Founded in 1994, Tanner|Hill Gallery began as a venue for, mostly southern, emerging talent. In 2004/2005, the gallery broadened its focus to include contemporary trained as well as self-taught artists. Housed in a remodeled 19th century factory building in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the gallery later expanded to include two project spaces in Atlanta’s Westside Provisions District and in Chattanooga’s Warehouse Row. The galleries in both Chattanooga and Atlanta were gathering places for the visual, performing and literary arts. In 2013, Tanner|Hill Gallery closed its permanent locations to focus on site specific projects and private placement out of NW Arkansas, New York City and Chattanooga.

In support of its early mission to promote the work of both regionally and nationally recognized talent, Tanner|Hill Gallery worked on a range of projects with distinguished institutions such as the High Museum of Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, Hunter Museum of Art and Knoxville Museum among others. The gallery has participated in a number of national art fairs, including the Outsider Art Fair, Works on Paper, ArtMiami, the Dallas Art Fair and Art Chicago, to name a few.
